Controversial Ugandan politician Alex Luwemba Luswa, best known as the former personal assistant to the late Kawempe North MP Muhammad Ssegirinya, has revealed his intention to contest for the presidency of Uganda. In a candid interview with a local YouTuber, Luswa stated that he is seriously considering a bid for the country’s highest office, though not in the upcoming 2026 election cycle.

Luswa explained that he will give National Unity Platform (NUP) President Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine) “his last chance” to unseat President Yoweri Museveni in 2026. Should Kyagulanyi fail, Luswa vowed to step forward himself: “I am planning to contest for the office of the President in the next few years. I am giving my brother Kyagulanyi his last chance at removing President Museveni; if he fails, I will do it myself.”
Luswa’s political profile rose after serving as Ssegirinya’s aide for over four years, managing constituency projects and stepping up during the late MP’s illness. Despite being endorsed by Ssegirinya’s family to succeed him as MP, Luswa lost overwhelmingly in the March 2025 Kawempe North by-election, where Elias Luyimbaazi Nalukoola was declared the winner. Luswa’s announcement comes as he seeks to rebuild his political standing, having recently asked for forgiveness from NUP after running as an independent and splitting the opposition vote.
