Uganda Cranes captain Emmanuel Okwi has officially announced his retirement from international football at the age of 32. The forward made the announcement on March 18, 2025, stating that he is stepping aside to give younger players an opportunity ahead of Uganda’s participation in the 2025 CHAN tournament and the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Okwi, who made his senior national team debut in 2009 under Coach Bobby Williamson, has had a stellar international career. Over the years, he has established himself as one of Uganda’s most prolific forwards, scoring 28 goals in 95 appearances for the Cranes.

His most notable tournament performance came at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, where he played a key role in Uganda’s campaign, scoring twice—one goal in a 2-0 win against DR Congo and another in a 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe.
In his heartfelt retirement statement, Okwi emphasized that with East Africa set to host the 2027 AFCON, it was time to pass the mantle to young, upcoming talents who will shape Uganda’s football future.
“Having cherished all those memories, I believe it is time for me to bow out and pave the way for our talented young football players.”
He also expressed gratitude to his family, coaches, fans and the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) for their support throughout his career.
Despite retiring from international football, Okwi will continue his club career, currently playing for Kiyovu SC in Rwanda. His retirement marks the end of an era for the Uganda Cranes, but his legacy as a leader and goal scorer will be remembered for years to come.
