For many former entertainers, early career memories often come with a sense of nostalgia.
Hellen Lukoma, however, says her years in Obsessions are firmly in the past, revealing during an appearance on Sanyuka Uncut that she misses nothing about the group that helped launch her entertainment career.
What do I miss about obsessions? Nothing. I think obsessions belonged to that era of my youth.
Founded by Roni Mulindwa, The Obsessions became a household name across East Africa and produced stars including Sheebah Karungi, Sharon O, Jaki Tusiime and Lukoma.
While she credits the group with teaching her valuable lessons, Lukoma says it is a chapter she would rather leave behind.
There are things I learned and there are some I did not learn. As I have said, I learned a lot, but I pray God never puts me in a place like that again because it is one of those experiences I really dread now.
The former Obsessions member added that her feelings have only grown stronger with age.
As I grow older, I dread it even more. It worked for me, and I am grateful for it, but I never want to experience something like that ever again.
What makes the remarks notable is that Lukoma has been saying the same thing for years.
In a 2022 interview, she described her experience in the group as “very bad” and rejected the idea that she misses those days.
For what? Why would I miss a marathon of hate, pain and competition? I stand and walk alone. I do not walk in packs.
She went on to criticize what she sees as the downside of entertainment groups.
There is competition, hate, gossip, and demotivation. There is nothing good it [The Obsessions] taught me apart from pushing myself to be better, because the bad things made me realise I needed to be on the good side of things.
Despite her harsh assessment, Lukoma acknowledges that The Obsessions played a role in shaping her career.
Still, if her latest comments are anything to go by, it remains one chapter of her life she has no interest in revisiting.
